(Single letter) Printing

The history of printing begins in Asia around the year 770, invented as a printing method with wooden panels of block books. This process was however extremely cumbersome and expensive. About 1450 then, Johannes Gutenberg revolutionized printing with movable type made of lead. Duplication was now cheaper and more accessible to a broader society.

Finally in 1797 Alois Senefelder, with the invention of lithography, laid the foundation of offset printing which is still the dominant printing process.

With the development of electrophotography and the modern digital printing around 1995 we arrive at what is now modern printing. Revolutionary developments in digital printing and new forms of books (e-books etc.) are visibly changing our media and communication culture .
